Hassanal Bolkiah, the 29th Sultan of Brunei and one of the world's longest-reigning monarchs, was recently photographed wearing the Richard Mille RM56-01 Tourbillon Sapphire — a watch so rare that fewer people own one than have walked on the moon. The sighting is notable even by the Sultan's extraordinary standards, confirming that his collection continues to occupy the very highest tier of contemporary watchmaking.

The Richard Mille RM56-01 is defined by an engineering achievement that most manufacturers would not even attempt: a three-part case — bezel, middle, and caseback — machined entirely from synthetic corundum (sapphire crystal), the second-hardest material after diamond. Achieving optical clarity while tolerating the mechanical stresses of a functioning timepiece demanded years of R&D. Inside sits a manual-winding skeletonised tourbillon movement, calibre RM56-01, beating at 21,600 vph with a 45-hour power reserve. The cable-suspension system for the movement — titanium cables just 0.35mm in diameter holding the gear train within the sapphire shell — is itself a watchmaking first, isolating the calibre from shocks that would otherwise crack the transparent case.

Richard Mille introduced the RM56-01 in 2012, producing only five numbered examples. That figure has never been revised upward. In collector circles the reference occupies rare company alongside the Patek Philippe 1518 in stainless steel or the Rolex Paul Newman Daytona as a piece whose significance is inseparable from its scarcity. Unlike those vintage references, however, the RM56-01 is a triumph of 21st-century materials science rather than historical accident.

Hassanal Bolkiah needs little introduction to serious watch enthusiasts. The Sultan's collection is rumoured to number in the thousands of references and includes bespoke commissions from virtually every major maison. His appearance in an RM56-01 is not a publicity gesture — it is the natural expression of a collector who has the means and the knowledge to acquire objects at the frontier of what is technically possible.

With only five pieces in existence, the Richard Mille RM56-01 Tourbillon Sapphire has no meaningful grey market. When examples do surface privately — which is exceptionally rare — they transact well above the original £1.14 million list price. For a reference this scarce, provenance and discretion matter more than any published figure.
