Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan of Brunei and one of the most storied watch collectors on the planet, was recently spotted wearing a Richard Mille RM 27-01 Tourbillon — the Rafael Nadal collaboration piece that remains one of the most technically audacious wristwatches ever produced. For a man whose collection is rumored to number in the thousands, choosing to wear the RM 27-01 in public speaks volumes about the model's singular status.

Richard Mille unveiled the RM 27-01 in 2013 as the culmination of years of co-development with Rafael Nadal, who had worn Richard Mille watches on court since 2010. The core engineering challenge was extreme: create a tourbillon capable of surviving the shock loads — estimated at up to 5,000 Gs — transmitted through Nadal's wrist during a 200 km/h serve. The solution was a triaxial suspension system and a cable-suspended movement architecture drawn directly from suspension bridge engineering. The result is a manually wound tourbillon caliber, the RM 27-01, whose entire movement weighs just 3.5 grams. The case itself is constructed from NTPT Carbon, a layered carbon composite originally developed for America's Cup yacht racing.

The RM 27-01 was produced as a limited edition of just 50 pieces globally, a number consistent with the ultra-exclusive tier of Richard Mille's Nadal series. Each subsequent Nadal collaboration — through the RM 27-02, 27-03, and 27-04 — has pushed the engineering envelope further, but the 27-01 retains a foundational collector appeal as the model that first proved the concept. Its combination of absurd technical ambition, tangible sporting provenance, and microscopic production run places it firmly in the upper echelon of contemporary horology.

Hassanal Bolkiah's affinity for Richard Mille is well documented. The Sultan's collection is widely understood to include some of the most rarified modern complications available, and the RM 27-01 is precisely the kind of piece — technically irreproducible, numerically scarce, narratively compelling — that anchors a serious contemporary collection.

At an official retail price of approximately $740,000, the Richard Mille RM 27-01 Tourbillon already occupies rarefied air at list. On the secondary market, confirmed sales have pushed well past that figure, with grey-market demand driven by the model's sold-out status and its ironclad association with one of sport's most recognizable names. Availability is effectively zero through conventional channels.
