Sheikh Khalifa Bin Hamad, a prominent figure within the Qatari royal family and a collector known for acquiring pieces at the furthest edge of horological achievement, was recently photographed wearing a white carbon Richard Mille RM27-01 — one of no more than ten examples ever produced in this specific configuration. The sighting is a reminder that, for a certain tier of collector, rarity and technical provocation matter far more than discretion.

The Richard Mille RM27-01 was developed in close collaboration with Rafael Nadal and launched in 2013 as a genuine engineering exercise rather than a mere sponsorship exercise. At its heart sits a manual-winding tourbillon calibre — the RM27-01 movement — constructed around a cable-suspension system that anchors the movement within the case using braided steel cables barely 0.35mm in diameter. The entire watch, case included, weighs just 18.83 grams. Richard Mille and its engineering partners designed the RM27-01 to withstand shock loads in excess of 3,000 Gs, a specification validated by Nadal wearing it through multiple French Open campaigns.

The standard RM27-01 was already produced in extremely limited numbers using NTPT carbon composite and titanium. The white carbon edition referenced here represents a further constraint — ten pieces only — using a variant of NTPT carbon that yields a dramatically lighter, striated ivory aesthetic in place of the signature dark layered finish. White carbon NTPT is notoriously difficult to produce consistently, which explains both the micro-production run and the premium it commands.

For serious Richard Mille collectors, the RM27-01 in any configuration sits near the top of the hierarchy. It is one of the few references that combines a genuine complications narrative, a documented athletic provenance, and a case material story sophisticated enough to satisfy technically literate buyers. The white carbon variant elevates all three factors simultaneously.

Sheikh Khalifa Bin Hamad's appearance with the RM27-01 white carbon fits a pattern visible across Gulf royalty — the acquisition of references that are functionally unavailable to the open market. With a UK list price in the region of £700,000 and secondary market demand far outpacing supply, grey market valuations for the white carbon RM27-01 routinely exceed the million-dollar threshold when examples surface at all.
