In an archival photograph that has quietly circulated among watch connoisseurs, Giorgio Armani is seen wearing one of the rarest objects in twentieth-century watchmaking: a Cartier Étanche in yellow gold on a leather strap. The image, likely dating from the 1980s given Armani's appearance, captures the designer in a characteristic contemplative pose — and on his wrist, a rectangular case that most collectors would struggle to identify on sight.

The Cartier Étanche was introduced in the 1930s as the maison's answer to a seemingly intractable engineering problem: how to waterproof a rectangular watch case. Round cases had been sealed with threaded casebacks and crown tubes, but the geometry of a Tank-derived rectangle presented a fundamentally different challenge. Edmond Jaeger, the movement architect behind much of Cartier's technical output in that era, devised an elegant solution: the movement and dial were mounted on an inner gold chassis, which was then encased in a rubber seal that wrapped entirely around the assembly, including over the winding stem arbor. The result was a watch-within-a-watch, waterproof by isolation rather than by gaskets alone.

The case shape visible in the reference image confirms the Étanche typology — a slightly elongated rectangle with softened lugs and minimal dial decoration: Roman numerals in black, blued steel sword hands, the characteristic Cartier typography, and a cream sector dial. The yellow gold case and tan leather strap are period-correct and consistent with known surviving examples.

From a collector standpoint, the Étanche occupies rarefied territory. Production numbers were extremely limited, surviving examples are scarce, and the technical ingenuity embedded in the design gives it credibility beyond pure aesthetics. It appears rarely at auction; when it does, it commands serious attention from specialist collectors rather than generalist watch buyers.

Armani's choice is quietly eloquent. A man whose design philosophy is built on restraint, structure, and the elimination of the superfluous wearing a watch whose entire engineering purpose was to hide complexity behind a clean rectangular face — it is, in retrospect, a perfect pairing. No retail or grey-market pricing is applied here given the one-of-a-kind vintage nature of surviving pieces.
