Royal Khalifa Bin Hamad spotted wearing Richard Mille

Sheikh Khalifa Bin Hamad, a prominent member of Qatar's ruling Al Thani family and a figure synonymous with serious watch collecting at the highest level, was recently spotted wearing one of Richard Mille's most extreme and coveted references — the RM 27-02 Tourbillon Rafael Nadal. With only 50 examples ever produced, a sighting of this watch on any wrist is a genuine horological event.

The Richard Mille RM 27-02 was developed in close collaboration with Rafael Nadal and debuted in 2015 as the successor to the RM 27-01. Its central engineering achievement is a hand-wound tourbillon movement — calibre RM27-02 — suspended within the case by a braided cable construction inspired by yacht rigging, anchored at four points and capable of absorbing shocks exceeding 10,000 Gs. That figure is not marketing fiction: Richard Mille actually strapped the prototype to Nadal's wrist during match play on the clay courts of Roland Garros to validate it. The case itself is constructed from North Thin Ply Technology carbon — NTPT — a layered carbon-fibre composite originally developed for America's Cup racing yachts. Each case exhibits a unique grain pattern, making every one of the 50 pieces visually distinct. The baseplate and bridges are machined from grade 5 titanium, and the total weight of the watch comes in at under 19 grams. The strap is a bespoke Velcro-fastened rubber band, designed to withstand the rotational forces experienced during a 200 km/h serve.

For collectors, the RM 27-02 occupies a singular position in the Richard Mille catalogue. The Rafael Nadal collaboration references are consistently among the most sought-after in the brand's history, and the 27-02 — with its dramatic cable-suspended movement architecture visible through the sapphire crystal — is widely considered the technical apex of that series. A production run of 50 pieces ensures that demand will permanently outstrip supply.

Sheikh Khalifa Bin Hamad's taste for Richard Mille is well established; the Qatari royal family has long been among the brand's most prominent patrons. At a UK list price of £550,000 and grey-market values climbing considerably higher, the RM 27-02 is less a purchase than an acquisition — and on the Sheikh's wrist, it reads exactly that way.
