Entrepreneur Chiara Ferragni spotted wearing Rolex

Chiara Ferragni, the Milan-born entrepreneur who built a global fashion empire from a blog, was recently spotted wearing a steel and gold Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 16523 — a watch that carries considerably more horological depth than its two-tone aesthetic might first suggest.

The ref. 16523 was produced between 1988 and 2000, representing the first generation of automatic Daytonas. Before this series, the Daytona ran on manual-wind Valjoux movements. When Rolex committed to automatic chronograph production, it turned to Zenith, licensing the celebrated El Primero caliber 400 — a high-frequency movement beating at 36,000 vph — and heavily modifying it into the Rolex caliber 4030. Among the most visible changes: Rolex replaced the El Primero's column wheel with a cam-and-lever system and reduced the parts count substantially. The result was characteristically Rolex in philosophy — robust, regulated to tight tolerances, and serviceable on Rolex's own terms.

Identifying a "Zenith" Daytona from its successor is straightforward once you know the trick. On the cal. 4030-equipped ref. 16523, the hour counter sits at 6 o'clock and the running seconds subdial at 9 o'clock. When Rolex introduced the fully in-house caliber 4130 in 2000 with the ref. 116523, it rearranged the subdial layout — hours moved to 6, minutes to 3, running seconds to 9 — and added a column wheel and vertical clutch, dramatically improving chronograph feel and precision. The generational shift makes the 16523 a historically significant pivot point in the Daytona lineage.

For collectors, the ref. 16523 in its steel and gold "Rolesor" configuration occupies an interesting middle ground: more accessible than a full yellow gold Daytona, more wearable than a steel-only ref. 16520, and carrying the added narrative weight of the Zenith movement debate. Dials in good condition — particularly white or black with matching subdials — drive significant premiums on the secondary market.

Ferragni's choice of this particular reference reads as quietly considered rather than overtly conspicuous. The ref. 16523 rewards those who recognize it. Retail pricing for this reference was discontinued, but grey-market examples in good condition regularly change hands well above five figures, reflecting sustained collector demand for the last generation of Daytonas powered by an outside movement.
